This week in NYC: what actually moves your money
A portion of proceeds is not a number. Registered nonprofits file public IRS Form 990 returns showing what came in and where it went. The ask happens at the table with your card out. The check almost never happens at all.

A portion can be one penny on a thirty dollar plate. Technically true, legal to advertise, and impossible to tell apart from real giving.

You said yes because saying no to a good cause mid-order feels like being a small monster, and everyone in that room knew you would. That is why it was there. The ask happens at the emotional peak with the line behind you. The verification happens never. Here is the part that closes the gap: registered nonprofits file public IRS Form 990 returns showing what came in and where it went, and pulling one takes about four minutes.
How to check a charity plate before you pay for it
1. Make them name the organization. Not a cause, not a community, a registered name you can spell. A vague answer is the answer.
2. Ask for the number, not the gesture. How much per plate, or what exact percentage, and of what. Of the whole check, or the dish, or the profit after the house subtracts what it likes.
3. Pull the 990. Search the named nonprofit on the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search or ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer. The filing lists revenue and disbursements. If the campaign ran a full year and nothing landed, that is your receipt.
